Free printable Chinese writing worksheets
Thirty worksheets in five levels, from your first strokes to a Tang dynasty poem. Trace the grey characters, then write them yourself in the practice boxes. Every sheet comes in Traditional and Simplified characters, on A4 or US Letter paper.
Level 1
First Strokes
Start here if you have never written a Chinese character. These sheets use simple characters with few strokes, many of them pictures of things: a person, a tree, a mountain. Trace the grey character three times, then write it on your own.
Level 2
Building Blocks
Most Chinese characters are built from smaller parts called components. Each sheet in this level takes one common component and shows six characters that use it, the way an English word root like "port" appears in transport, import and portable.
The Person Component 亻
休 你 他 們The Water Component 氵
海 河 洗 清The Tree Component 木

Everyday Words
Most Chinese words are made of two characters. These sheets move from single characters to whole words, grouped by topic. Trace each word once, then write it three more times.
Level 4
Short Sentences
Now put words together. Each sentence on these sheets uses only common characters and is short enough to write in one row. Trace it once, then write it twice on your own. Punctuation marks get their own box, as they do on Chinese writing paper.

Are these worksheets free?
Yes. You can download, print and copy them for personal or classroom use. No sign-up is needed.
Traditional or Simplified?
Every worksheet comes in both. Traditional characters are used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Simplified characters are used in mainland China and Singapore. Choose the one you are learning.
Why don’t the worksheets show stroke order?
Stroke order is easier to learn by watching each stroke being drawn and getting feedback while you write. The Hanzibloc app shows every character stroke by stroke and checks each stroke you make. Use these sheets for extra practice on paper.
Which paper size should I choose?
Choose A4 if you live outside the US and Canada, and US Letter if you live in the US or Canada. The layout is the same.
Which level should I start with?
If you have never written a Chinese character, start with Level 1. Each level builds on the one before it: characters, then components, words, sentences and finally famous lines.
